The survey department at UNITECH provides the only accredited surveying and geodesy related courses in Papua New Guinea, offering either;
- Bachelor of Technology (Surveying); 4 years full time
- Diploma of Surveying; 2 years full time
The Bachelor's Degree in Surveying enables graduates to become Licenced Surveyors in PNG.
THE SURVEYING PROGRAM
The degree course has the following aims:
- To provide a sound grounding in the principles of surveying and spatial measurement and assessment;
- To prepare graduates in the application of techniques etc. to activities such as land, engineering, mining and hydrographic surveys, land administration and property development;
- To develop an appreciation of the factors affecting land use decisions in Papua New Guinea;
- To prepare graduates to be able to communicate effectively with other professionals and the community;
- To prepare students for professional and academic development and
- To educate students so that after a period of training they can play an effective role in the practice development of surveying in Papua New Guinea.
- The Diploma course has similar aims but emphasises field and office techniques.
Entry requirements
Diploma in Surveying
Entry is normally at Grade 12 higher school certificate level (or equivalent) with credit passes in English, major mathematics and science.
Bachelor of Surveying
Applicants must satisfy the following criteria for entry to the Bachelor of Surveying degree program:- passing grades in all subjects and a grade weighted average or 65% or better in Departmental subjects in year two of the Diploma in Surveying.
OR
In the case of applicants who have not filled the above criteria, documentary evidence of a minimum of two years of appropriate post diploma professional experience and a successful interview with the Head of Department and the relevant course Director.
Special Rules:
Students in the Bachelor of Surveying Degree course must accumulate twelve weeks of industrial experience; ten weeks of which must be in an organisation approved by the Department. A diary of industrial experience must be maintained and presented. In special circumstances the full requirement may be waived upon approval of the Head of Department. Students are encouraged to seek vacation employment in suitable organisations early in the program and should not wait until year three to seek the required industrial experience.
Candidates are required to satisfy the examiners in each year of the course, as prescribed in the Schedules of Subjects, before they are permitted to proceed to the following year of the course.
In the examinations for each semester for each year of the courses, the following shall apply:
Candidates with a weighted average mark of less than 50% shall normally be discontinued.
Candidates with a grade of achievement of F = Fail in two subjects or more shall normally be discontinued.
In subjects where the assessment is by both examination and continuous assessment the student must obtain a pass in each component
Candidates who have been re-admitted into candidature or are repeating a semester shall not normally be exempted from study of any subject in semester being repeated in terms of Rule 18 of the General Rules for Undergraduate Degrees. Diplomas and Certificates.
