The survey section offers several research programmes addressing several key geodetic and GPS related problems in PNG including; refinement of the PNG94 Geodetic Datum, the geoid in PNG and the best-practice adoption of GPS surveying in the PNG environment. The section is in collaboration with the PNG National Mapping Bureau, The University of California Santa Cruz, The Australian National University and the Rabual Volcanological Observatory, in providing a critical role in the ongoing Crustal Motion Survey examining the complex tectonic processes which are occuring in Papua New Guinea.
Current research areas
- Developing a concept for a dynamic datum in PNG
- Further definition of the geoidal model in PNG
- Development of transformation parameters and distortion grid models between AGD66 and a geocentric datum
- Implementation of differential GPS techniques for GIS in PNG
