University Geodetic Research Consortium

University Geodetic Research Consortium

Formally established in February 2008, the University Geodetic Research Consortium comprises Australia's leading university scientists using geodetic tools to undertake research in sea level variations, polar mass balance and groundwater variations, the Earth's gravity field, tectonic deformation and long-term stability of the Australian continent.

With over two decades of expertise in geodesy and oceanography, the scientists of the UGRC are leading Australian and international research in climate and geophysical phenomena that affect the Australian society.

Close links exist between UGRC members and government and private industry partners. Of particular note in recent times was the $15.8M federal funding for geodetic infrastructure for Australia, bringing together the four UGRC universities as well as state government Lands departments and Geoscience Australia.

ARC Funding for Environmental Geodesy

The UGRC has been awarded $1.16M funding from the Australian Research Council for the 2008-2012 period to conduct research into the effects of climate change on the Australian region.

The ARC Discovery project, titled "Environmental Geodesy: Sea level and water variations in the Australian region", will utilise space-geodetic satellite missions that measure changes in the Earth's shape and gravity field to study how sea levels are varying around the Australian coast, how the Antarctic ice sheet is melting as a result of a warming climate and to develop new techniques to study changes in Australia's groundwater resources.

The funded proposal will generate four new postdoc research positions, with funds to enable the young researchers to spend time at each of the four institutions (Curtin University of Technology, The Australian National University, The University of New South Wales, The University of Tasmania).
