Roads
Kerema can be accessed by Port Moresby by road, however this isn't recommened for the following reasons;
Frequent holdups along the Hiritano Highway, where potholes and washouts are frequent
Section of road from Malalaua to Kerema is often impassable after heavy rain due to deep muddy sections.
Road is sealed along the Trans-Island section between Bereina and Malalaua (sealing completed in 1999)

Adverse conditions
Security is a major concern in 2003. The airport waiting area is subject to frequent and violent holdups. Wait there as little as possible and ensure that 1-2 other people with bushknives are next to you at all times. Contact Brother Fabian at the Catholic Mission before flight arrival. He will pick up from airport and go straight to the Mission where the survey station and accommodation are located.
