Research:

The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory carries out research on a variety of fluid flow problems, with complementary emphases on laboratory experiments and numerical modelling.

Central themes include:

The dynamics of ocean circulation on the rotating earth, such as wind-driven and thermohaline circulation.

The dynamics of the Earth's mantle and lithosphere including the long-term evolution of both the mantle and plate tectonics through Earth's history.

Volcanic processes such as melting and solidification, the flow of solidifying lava and the ascent of mantle plumes.

The GFD group is a world leader in geological fluid mechanics

GFD Lab

The GFD Laboratory at RSES, ANU, moved into a new specially-designed building in 2000. Facilities include a rotating table for studies of the effects of planetary rotation on fluid flows, and extensive equipment for flow visualization and data acquisition.

Flow Visualisation

See our new Flowvis Photo Gallery, which shows images collected from decades of innovative fluid experiments.
