The equations of elastodynamics are form-invariant with respect to a class of geometric transformations, this situation being analogous to known properties of the heat diffusion equation and Maxwell's equations.  Ostensibly, this form invariance leads to an infinite-fold non-uniqueness in seismic inverse problems, but it will be shown that this property in fact reflects an mathematical ambiguity in the theory and does not have direct physical implications. Nonetheless, the form-invariance of elastodynamics opens up a range of useful applications in computational seismology that will be discussed.
