Richard has turned his fascination for rocks into an underwater mission to map the seafloor. Three quarters of all volcanic eruptions happen underneath the ocean, but often no geologist will even be aware of it.
Listen to Richard talk about his research in this Conversations interview.
Richard has spent much of the past 15 years in the Pacific, discovering more about active and extinct underwater volcanoes. He is an igneous petrologist and Professor of Geology in the Research School of Earth Sciences, at the Australian National University.
A chapter about Richard is included in the new book, Southern Surveyor, written by Michael Veitch and published by CSIRO Publishing.
