‘There is no vestige of a beginning and no prospect of an end’. This seminar confirms the first part of James Hutton’s famous observation. By finding 3800 million-year-old stromatolites, tangible evidence of life on Earth is pushed-back by another 100 million years – to the start of the interpretable sedimentary record. The environment of this early life is reconstructed from geological, geochemical and isotopic evidence.
