Recent Field Expeditions
2001 Underwater, raised-reef, and microatoll coral drilling in the Mentawai Islands, southwest Sumatra, Indonesia (20 May - 9 July, 2001). The expedition involved four crew and nine staff from RSES (3), Geoscience Australia (1), Caltech (2), and the Indonesian Institute of Science (3) aboard the Padang Dive Pty Ltd vessel. The expedition produced material forming the basis for N. Abram's PhD thesis: Multi-proxy coral reconstructions and Holocene evolution of the Indian Ocean Dipole.
2000 Visiting Scientist for the summit ice core drilling of Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, with Prof. L. Thompson and drilling team (Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State University) to link research designed to reconstruct the history of the Indian Ocean Dipole (RSES) and precipitation in east Africa (Ohio).
1999 Underwater and raised-reef coral drilling in Alor, Indonesia (11 August - 23 September, 1999). Staff from RSES (3), the Indonesian Institute of Science (1), and Kupang Dive Pty Ltd (3) participated in the coral drilling.
1998 Underwater and raised-reef coral drilling of the Laundi Terraces, Sumba, Indonesia (17 October - 27 November, 1998). The expedition involved staff from RSES (4), the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (3), and Kupang Dive Pty Ltd (3).
1998 Chief Scientist for Project TROPICS (Tropical River Ocean Processes in Coastal Settings) Cruise Leg 6B to the Schoeten-Ninigo Islands area, northern Papua New Guinea (26 May - 6 June, 1998). The cruise involved seven crew and five scientific staff from RSES (2), AIMS (1), and JCU (2) aboard the Australian Institute of Marine Science RV Lady Basten and was followed by land-based coral drilling (7-25 June, 1998) This was the first coral drilling expedition to this region, which produced material forming the basis for H. McGregor's PhD thesis: Coral reconstructions of Holocene ocean-atmosphere variability in the Western Pacific Warm Pool.
