A Tectonic Reconstruction made using Pplates
software.
Pplates
Pplates is a plate tectonics reconstruction tool for MacIntosh computers
aimed at helping geologists create more realistic reconstructions by
introducing analogues of geophysical processes to reconstruction technology,
eventually tying reconstructions to high-performance computer modelling.
This aim is quite broad and we have taken only the initial step in this
direction with BetaPplates.
Pplates works by applying a triangular mesh to areas of the globe
and then moving the meshes. Meshes can be moved rigidly, or deformed
by moving individual mesh nodes. Data that can be moved with the meshes
currently includes topology and outline (boundary) data. For topology,
the data that is moved can be classified as either continent or ocean
crust, and its volume can be held constant during mesh deformation with
the resulting changes in elevation (with or without isostasy) being depicted
in colour.
