Current ResearchI research how climate was in the past so we may understand what drives changes in climate. I do this by examining geochemical trends in speleothems (cave stalagmites, stalactites and flowstones) which indicate how wet or dry it was in the past. We rely on such archives to tell us about climate before instrumental weather records were kept. Our instrumental records are only about 100 years long in many places of the world - too short to tell us about climate change that operates on multi-decadal, centennial, millennial or longer timescales. Other examples of climate archives are ice cores, tree rings, corals and lake or ocean sedimentary cores. |
