Biography
Lloyd graduated with a BSc. (Hons I) from the UNSW in 2006. He worked
as a geologist for Geoscience Australia researching the fault architecture
of Australia's Southern Margin basins, the potential for CO2 sequestration
in the Bowen Basin and the palaeostress history of the Yilgarn Craton.
Lloyd started a PhD with the Structure/Tectonics group in early 2008.
He is investigating the metamorphic and deformational history of the
NW Indian Himalaya.

Professional Affiliations:
• Geological Society of Australia (GSA)
• Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG)
Other Interests:
• Co-editor of ‘EPIC’ magazine (ANU Mountaineering Club)
Employment History:
January 2008 – Current
• PhD Candidate, The Research School of Earth Sciences, The Australian
National
University
• Thesis Title: The character of episodicity in the Himalayan Orogen
• Supervised by Professor Gordon Lister, Dr. Marnie Forster, Professor
Trevor
Ireland and Professor Talat Ahmad (Delhi University)
January 2006 – January 2008
• Research Geoscientist, Geoscience Australia (GA)
• From January 2006 to January 2007 I worked in three projects in
the different
divisions of Geoscience Australia. These three projects were part of
Geoscience
Australia’s 2006 Graduate Program.
• My first graduate project involved reviewing the practice of 'pre-releasing'
information from GA and writing a policy to minimise the risks associated
with the
process (i.e. the unofficial release of GA's unpublished data and information).
The
policy and supporting documents were endorsed by GA's executive board
• My second graduate project was based in the CO2CRC and involved
an assessment
of the north-east Bowen Basin (Queensland) for the suitability of CO2
geosequestration.
• My third graduate project was based in the Predictive Minerals
Discovery
Cooperative Research Centre (pmd*CRC). This project involved three weeks
in the
field examining structural cross-cutting relationships in open pit mines
in the
northern Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. The structural data was analysed
using
the graphical P-T dihedral method to determine the palaeostress direction
of
orogenic events linked to gold mineralisation.
• From January 2007 to January 2008 the main focus of my work was
to investigate
the structural history and fault characteristics of Australia's Southern
Margin
sedimentary basins. I am currently writing a report and producing a series
of maps
detailing the findings of this study. Most of this study was based on
detailed
seismic interpretation. I was also involved in cataloguing dredge samples
from a
scientific survey in the Great Australian Bight as well as assisting
with the training
and development of new recruits
December 2004 – February 2005
• Employed as a student geologist with Placer Dome Asia Pacific.
I was based at their
Red Hill operation, a small open cut gold mine about 30km north of Kalgoorlie,
Western Australia. My work involved digitising ore-block plans, geotechnical
mapping, RC chip logging, marking ore-blocks for excavation, sample collection
and
assisting the blast (explosives) crew.
July 2004 – December 2004
• Employed as a student geologist with Sydney Gas Ltd. I worked
on several projects,
including the development of a hydrological model of the Sydney Basin.
This model
aimed to assist drill hole planning. I also investigated the correlation
of sonic logs to
'televiewer' data to understand the characteristics of sub-surface coals
seams,
specifically porosity and fracture development.
May 2004 – July 2004
• Employed as a GIS contractor by the NSW Geological Survey. This
work involved
building small geological databases for the conversion of hardcopy maps
into a
digital format.
December 2003 – February 2004
• Employed as a student geologist with Triako Resources, Mineral
Hill Mine (an
underground gold/copper operation in central NSW). My duties included
sample
collection and dispatch for assay, data entry into the mine database,
drawing plans
and assisting an elderly geology whilst working underground.
