Earth Chemistry

We measure isotopic compositions, chemical and molecular abundances, to constrain timing and the nature of processes involved in geologic, paleobiologic, and planetary systems. Areas of current interest include…

  • Abundances of chemical elements and their isotopes as they are fractionated in geological processes
  • Evolution and prehistory of the solar system through analysis of lunar rocks and soil, as well as refractory inclusions and presolar grains in meteorites
  • Evolution of the early Earth with regard to the formation of the earliest continental crust and implications for the atmosphere and hydrosphere
  • The nature of orogenic events utilizing temperature and rate dependent systems
  • Tracing the evolution of life through analysis of biomarkers and molecular fossils
  • The origin and evolution of massive ore-bodies through a combined isotopic, chemical and petrologic approach
