Excimer lasers with 193 nm wavelengths can be used to ablate many solid materials at spot sizes of 20 to 400 microns and samples can be drilled or rastered. The laser ablation chamber available is the first of its kind developed and still provides some of the best ablation characteristics. It is coupled to an LPF Pro 202 laser system that has a large dynamic range of possible laser energies. The system can be selectively coupled with the above machinery. Detection limits are generally in the high ppb to ppm (parts per billion to parts per million) range. Example materials analysed are: minerals, glass, fossils, pottery, bone, teeth, and paint.

A second 193 nm laser system is available, coupled to an Agilent 7700 ICP-MS. This setup is predominantly applied to petrological analyses such as thinsections, minerals and melt discs.
