Marine Geology & IODP

Description

The Marine Geology Group is studying processes related to the formation and destruction of ocean floor at ocean ridges, arcs, and backarcs, the interface between crust and mantle, associated mass transfer, and time-integrated evolution of mantle reservoirs. A key area of research is the study of volcanic processes, including subaerial and submarine intra-plate and island arc volcanoes, physical volcanology, geochemistry and petrology of mantle-derived melts and volcanic interaction with the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The Group uses a wide variety of analytical tools including experimental simulations, radiogenic and stable isotope research, petrochemical investigations and numerical modelling.

The group is working in close collaboration with the Australian Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) office located at RSES.
