Cobalt speciation in the open ocean and the natural of its complexation to natural organic ligands

This project aims to understand cobalt complexation in the ocean and its relationship to phytoplankton growth. In the ocean cobalt is strongly complexed to natural organic ligands. Understanding cobalt complexation by these ligands is vital because there is debate about how bioavailable these complexes are. To better understand cobalt complexation, we are making speciation measurements in samples collected across three frontal regions in the Southern Ocean.
