Tectonics and Resources

The Structure Tectonics Team @ ANU

Dave Wood discovers a gold nugget

The accumulation of mineral and energy resources takes place in the Earth in ways that depend critically upon the tectonic environment at the time in question.

This means that we can learn much about where to find mineral and energy resource deposits by developing an understanding of Tectonic Environments at the time Of their Deposition (TEODs). Naturally we need to carefully scrutinize geochronological data to make sure we have correctly ascertained the timing of deposition, and in particular we must be sure as to the timing of deposition relative to the products of various other geological processes occurring at the time.

Once we have determining timing, we can ascertain whether there have been particularly productive times during Earth history, and see if we can identify the reasons as to why this should have been so. Are there spatial as well as temporal aspects the processes that determine fertility of a particular region? Can we identify Fertility Assessment Criteria (FACs) that suggest particular regions should preferentially be targetted?

In the context of the above, are we able to identify any Geodynamically Indicated Targetting Strategies (GITs) that spatially limit a search area within a particular region?

Can we help develop practical scientific methods that enhance our ability to successfully explore for mineral and energy resource deposits.
