RSV Aurora Australis, Thursday, 17th January 2002

Still chundling across the Southern Indian Ocean towards Hobart at 18 knots. The swell was a bit higher today, up to 2-3 metres, but the AA was surfing it quite smoothly with the odd bit of sideways rock to liven things up. Most unlike our forward voyage so far. Today was mostly cloudy and a bit of long voyage lassitude was setting in with all and sundry. Spent the day reading (fact and fiction), stirring for a satay beef kebab meal. The quality and variety of the meals were noticeably better than the Polar Bird. The smell of stale deep fry doesn't pervade the bainmerie on the AA like its alter ego. One aspect I dislike on the AA is the fact that you can't linger, chat and socialise in the mess hall after meals like the Polar Bird. The eating police start getting their rolling pins if one remains more than a few minutes after the designated feeding hour. Clocks were put forward another hour today and darkness didn't kick in until midnight, though I had a great deal of trouble getting to sleep tonight.
