RSV Aurora Australis, Sunday, 20th January 2002

Clocks forward yet again, so finally back on AEDST. Not much life around this morning, after such an exuberant evening the night before. Sunday, a day of rest. The sea remained calm today as well and entertainment continued on apace today with some good live music in the lounge bar followed by the Voyage dinner at 6. Despite tucking into the emergency provisions it was still an extravaganza, with roasted meats, salmon, mussels, prawns and complimentary wine. Everybody was in good spirits and there were a lot of congratulatory speeches and toasts. For everybody else (apart from us latecomers) it had been an unexpectedly long and exciting voyage, rescuing a ship from the ice, transporting marooned expeditioners to Mawson, encountering illegal Japanese whaling ships etc. etc.. The dinner was followed by a recovery session down in the bar sipping the odd Cascade or two. A very pleasant wind down from the previous evening. I walked around the trawl deck for a bit to escape a rather unpleasant effluent smell that lingered in the ship for a while.
