RSV Aurora Australis, Wednesday, 23rd January 2002

After I managed a final hour's kip, we were in the tannin stained waters of the Derwent, passing by rolling green hills and forests with warm sunshine beaming on the open deck where we all were getting ready to arrive. Customs came on board with a few AAD staff and we were officially allowed back into Australia, and not re-directed to some remote Pacific island as Antarctic refugees. The ship berthed just after three, with a fanfare of shouts and crys from returning expeditioners and the awaiting families, friends and spectators ! Back in one piece, but only just.
